It's often said that cream rises to the top. That was certainly the case with credit unions in 2011. More and more people are becoming familiar with the credit union movement and becoming members. Unlike other financial institutions, credit unions were founded on the principal of people helping people. Instead of customers, we have members. Our members own this credit union. Due to the loyalty of members like you, the credit union had an incredibly successful year. FivePoint loaned out over $110 million to its members in 2011.
Our mission is simple: To improve the quality of life for our members and the community. One of the ways in which we remain committed to the community is donating back to the local charities. The Hughen Center, Nutrition and Services for Seniors and the Salvation Army are just a few of the charities that received donations from FivePoint. In addition, FivePoint also raised over $27,000 for American Cancer Society's Relay For Life. FivePoint achieved "Emerald" status and was awarded the "Super Business" award for the second time. Our employees raised this money through intense fundraising that included a bowling tournament, link and candy sales, numerous raffles and benefit nights at local eateries. The Texas Credit Union League awarded FivePoint the prestigious Dora Maxwell Award for our efforts.
Our community is also benefiting from our Financial Education efforts. We have been in over 25 schools and organizations, have had over 340 classrooms visits and reached over 3,100 students and adults. Each year, Junior Achievement coordinates a Finance Park and FivePoint employees are on hand to volunteer. This year we were at Memorial High School where ninth graders took real life situations and developed a budget and paid bills. This not only helps with everyday finances but also gives them the tools they need to save money and plan for their future. FivePoint was awarded an Honorable Mention for the Dejardins Youth Financial Education Award in recognition of outstanding achievement in a social responsibility program.
The youth of our community will be the leaders of tomorrow. That's why FivePoint has awarded ten $1000 scholarships to graduating High School seniors pursuing a college education. We congratulate our winners and wish them the best of luck in their academic endeavors.
As we look forward to 2012, we thank you for being a Fivepoint member and look forward in working together to make the New Year a prosperous one.
Sincerely,
Erik M. Shaw
